Abstract
”Now, we become just as sporadic participants” A qualitative study experience of individual counselor’s facility

A counselor at a hospital is a person who is working with the mental health of the patients. Due to today’s fast-pace society stress and other mental health problems has become more and more common which has led to a higher demand of counselor workers. Alongside the practical counseling work researchers are working on investigating how mental illness affects patients. The counselors are the only hospital staff with an education in social work, this means they have a vital role at the hospitals to provide other workers with an overall perspective of mental health. The results showed that hospital counselors who are working in their own facility gain both negative and positive experiences from having a specific facility in the hospital, geographically separate from other units in the hospital. That negative affects are that cooperation and communication between counselors and other staff professions degrades and that the availability for the patients who want to seek help from a counselor decreases due to the geographical distance of the facility. The positive effects of having their own facility is that counselors can work together to develop their own profession and be able to help and support each other in the daily work with the patients. Having a counselor’s facility influences their professional identity in a positive way. They doesn’t melt in the healthcare context like Sjöström (2013) conclusion was. Throughout this study we arrived at the conclusion that hospital counselors who work together in their own facility use an aposematic strategy in the jurisdiction work. (Less)
