- Abstract
- The aim of the study was to examine how feelings of stigma, guilt and shame are expressed
among parents of children living with mental ill-health. Research has stated that these feelings
manifest in families living with mental ill-health, which also aimed the focus of this study

experiences. The respondents were workers from various fields of social work in different
municipalities in Scania of southern Sweden. Four main themes were identified in the interviews
as they were recurring and found to be of importance to emphasize: the definitions of
shame and guilt, how shame and guilt are expressed and managed among parents, underlying
factors which influence feelings of stigma, shame and guilt as well as a discussion on stigma,
norms and a possible hierarchy of mental ill-health in the Swedish society. Through a thematic
analysis parents’ knowledge, including level of education, socio-economic status and
society awareness, was discovered to play a significant role as an underlying factor influencing
feelings of stigma, shame and guilt. An occurence of a diagnosis was also found to be of
importance among parents experiencing feelings of stigma, guilt and shame. (Less)
