The purpose of our essay was to highlight the situation among children in women's shelters in Sweden in addition to inquire into the practical work regarding children. The theories we have applied is childhood sociology, attachment theory as well as theory of cooperation. We conducted five semi-structured interviews at five different women's shelters with staff possessing a certain responsibility regarding children. The shelters we visited had all a significant children's perspective. The interviewees regarded children as agents and they catered for the desires and needs of the children to the utmost extent. All shelters strived to achieve a life as normal as possible for mothers and children. They offered conversational support to children as well as support in the relation between mother and child. They also played a significant role in establishing necessary contacts for mother and child. It was clarified in the interviews that the length of stay at the shelters tend to become longer as a result from the fact that the relocation to regular housing is limited due to the current housing shortage. Considering the purpose of women’s shelters as a temporary solution for mothers and children in need of protection this is unfortunate. We discovered that even if the work was based on a children's perspective at the shelters, it was difficult to meet all the needs of the children since it was at times difficult to achieve a functioning cooperation with the other operators of the society. For instance, we came to the conclusion that although there is compulsory school attendance in Sweden, the placing of children in women's shelters resulted in an interruption from school for a longer or shorter time. Contact with a child psychologist when needed was also a pronounced problem.
