- Abstract
- This thesis examines three Thai NGO's in the form of homes for children built in the aftermath of the 2004 Tsunami disaster. The purpose of the study was to examine the relationship between, on one hand, strategies used by the homes in order to obtain resources required to further continue their operations, and on the other hand, the explicit objectives of the homes to care for and protect the residents and their integrity. What does this relationship look like, how can it be interpreted and what ethical dilemmas might it arise? What does this relationship look like, how can it be interpreted and what ethical dilemmas might it arise? I have taken a qualitative approach, conducting a focused ethnography study through observations at the three homes, interviews and informal conversations with staff members, and a minor document review of brochures and web sites published by the homes. The analysis is guided by postcolonial theory. The main findings are that the homes take on similar strategies in order to ensure funding. In particular, they all offer people, often tourists, to pay a visit to the homes. In some cases, results show that residents of the homes find that the visits to some extent interfere with their personal space and integrity. In most cases results show that visits and other strategies for funding have a positive and/or no effect on the residents. However, through a postcolonial theory lens, structures of inequality can be identified. The question is how these are being understood and dealt with. (Less)
