Abstract
The master thesis was carried out for Sandvik SRP in cooperation with the division of Production and Materials Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering at Lund University. This thesis is part of a larger research project with the title ”Blyfria kopparlegeringar” funded by Vinnova within SIO Produktion 2030. Lead-free bearing-materials, which could be used to replace the current bear-ing-material containing 10 % lead, are studied in this thesis. The bearing-material is used as plain-bearings in stone crushers and other applications. The reason to get rid of lead in the bearing-material is because lead is a very toxic metal.

This project strives to form a foundation for the choice of a new bearing-material. Therefore friction- and wear tests were performed for five different alloys. The tests were performed in a machine, which has been developed by the division of Production and Materials Engineering. The test methodologies are described accurately so that new tests should be able to be performed if a new interesting material is found during further studies.

The friction- and wear chapter gives an understanding for the field and it is the foundation for the choice of methods during the laboratory work. Differ-ent alloys and bearing-materials are described to show what alternatives there are on the market and which materials that are used in plain-bearing construc-tions.

The bearing construction is analysed with the purpose of establishing require-ments of the bearing-material, and to identify its function. Potential problems, which can occur with the current material, are described to give an under-standing of what is important when a new material is going to be selected. The most important material parameters are also ranked and explained.

Proposals of improvements of the bearing construction are made, since the construction design is crucial for what materials that can be used. This is mainly because if the lubrication is improved, the bearing material does not need to have as good dry-friction properties, and then it is easier to get rid of the lead.

The result of the friction- and wear tests for the copper-based alloy containing bismuth indicates that the alloy is an option and is suitable for testing in a full-size prototype during real conditions. (Less)
