Personal Cool - "Cooling of an Individual"

This project is a collaboration with Electrolux, KTH Royal Institute of Technology and the School of Industrial Design (Lund University). The goal of the project was to investigate new ways of cooling an individual, to ultimately result in a product proposal.
We have all experienced heat waves in the summer, which can affect us even in our homes. In addition, typical home activities such as cleaning and cooking may cause our body temperature to feel uncomfortably high - even during winter.

There are techniques available for cooling us. They mainly revolve around changing the temperature in an environment (such as air conditioners), which can cause discomfort for others in the household since we all have our own temperature preferences.... (More)

We have all experienced heat waves in the summer, which can affect us even in our homes. In addition, typical home activities such as cleaning and cooking may cause our body temperature to feel uncomfortably high - even during winter.

There are techniques available for cooling us. They mainly revolve around changing the temperature in an environment (such as air conditioners), which can cause discomfort for others in the household since we all have our own temperature preferences. Furthermore, the procedure of cooling a room can be seen as a waste of energy since it’s the person and not the room that desires to be chilled... Other techniques, such as fans, evaporative methods (fans in combination with vapor) and phase change materials cools us because of convection, but when the air is humid or the temperature is too high then such technologies prove insufficient.

To cool us sufficiently, regardless of relative temperature and humidity, dry and cool air is needed. Systems that produce cool and dry air are large and heavy. Even the temperature control systems that exist today and which claim to be compact are not really that small (i.e. far from being desk top sized).

The findings from this project led us (me and my engineer co-worker Josefin Jäderberg) into an emerging, yet feasible, technology of producing cool and dry air. Through extensive research this technology has been translated into an ultra-portable cooling unit which is able to sufficiently cool a person at the distance of one meter.

The presented concept stands perfectly on the desk - to cool you while working; on the sofa table - for enhanced leisure; on the kitchen counter - a chilling helper against the hot stove; on the nightstand - for a comfortable night of sleep in the summer heat.

In addition, it has a feature to clean the air it is processing: removing everything from allergens to pollutants and dust particles which are constantly floating around us. The air purification feature not only makes your home healthier to live in, it also makes the product useful all year around regardless of your geographic location. (Less)
