Abstract
The aim of this study is to explore narratives on violence in lesbian relationships. The study seeks to explore how stories and the act of storytelling can be used as a means to investigate a topic that has been discounted by focusing on the conditions and limitations for speaking. The main objective of the study is to conduct a methodological discussion on how to examine the topic with an emancipatory approach by including the narrator as an active participant in the research process. I found that dominant narratives on intimate partner violence shaped by a binary understanding of gender make it... (More)
The aim of this study is to explore narratives on violence in lesbian relationships. The study seeks to explore how stories and the act of storytelling can be used as a means to investigate a topic that has been discounted by focusing on the conditions and limitations for speaking. The study consists of both a personal narrative about being in a relationship with violence and community-based perspectives on the subject. The main objective of the study is to conduct a methodological discussion on how to examine the topic with an emancipatory approach by including the narrator as an active participant in the research process. I found that dominant narratives on intimate partner violence shaped by a binary understanding of gender make it difficult to define, discuss and examine the violence that occurs in lesbian relationships. By using a theoretical perspective on narratives and feminist methodologies, the study purports that stories and the act of storytelling can be used as a method to negotiate meaning and agency for the narrator. Having the narrator take part as a research participant shaped the entire research process and had a positive impact on the narrator’s ability to process her experiences. (Less)
