- Abstract
- Thirteen different polymers have been investigated in the tries to find a polymeric water-based binder for the brazing alloy F300. F300 has the chemical formula Fe-24Cr-20Ni-10Cu-7P-5Mn-Si and is a gas-atomized metal powder used for high temperature brazing. Except being water-soluble the polymers used for the binder, would have to provide sufficient viscosity at a maximum 2 wt% and not gel under presence of cations leached from the F300. Another important quality for the new binder was that a pseudoplastic behavior could be proven. Five polymers stood the initial tests and were benchmarked against the already existing water-based binder, the B-binder with some brazing tests, first with the alloy F300 but also later the alloy HBNi613. Five polymers stood the initial tests and were benchmarked against the already existing water-based binder, the B-binder with some brazing tests, first with the alloy F300 but also later the alloy HBNi613. All binders created with the five polymers showed about equal results with the F300 compared with the B-binder, but worse results compared with the B-binder, when tested with the HBNi613. Evaluation of all results gave that the best polymer were the Methyl hydroxypropyl cellulose of the brand Benecel K200M from Ashland. This polymer has a good psedoplastic flow behavior and reached the lower limit of the viscosity interval that was set up for this test. It did so with 1.7 wt% polymer in water. Furthermore the TGA showed that a low amount of residuals after brazing are to be expected with results of 90 % burn off at 700° C. Most important the brazing test show real potential with low amounts of oxidations through all the testing and no gelling occur during storage of the brazing paste. (Less)
- Popular Abstract
- The development of a new binder at Höganäs AB gives the possibilities to finally using the stainless alloy F300 in heat exchanger which can sufficiently lower the concentration of metal ions in drinking water.
