Abstract
This thesis analyses political leadership by the President of the European Commission after the entry into force of the Lisbon Treaty. In the elections to the European Parliament 2014 a direct link was for the first time established between election results and the election of the President of the European Commission. The study is a single-case study of Jean-Claude Juncker in the period before formally assuming office. An analytical framework using institutional settings, situational factors and personal qualities as constitutive explanations is applied to investigate to what extent these explanations contribute as opportunities or constraints to either a transactional or transforming political leadership.
