Abstract
In the presented Master’s Thesis, the adaptive behaviour in 52 children born extremely preterm was explored, at 6.5-years of age. The participants were followed up in the Extremely Preterm Infants Study in Sweden (EXPRESS). The children’s adaptive behaviour were compared to 41 peers born at term. Parent’s ratings of their children on the Adaptive Behaviour Assessment System-II were used to evaluate the children’s adaptive behaviour. In the presented Master’s Thesis, the adaptive behaviour in 52 children born extremely preterm was explored, at 6.5-years of age. Parent’s ratings of their children on the Adaptive Behaviour Assessment System-II were used to evaluate the children’s adaptive behaviour. Results from the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-IV (WISC-IV) and the Strenghts and Difficulties Questionnaires (SDQ) were examined as potential predictors and mediators of adaptive behaviour. The results showed that the extremely preterm children were rated significantly lower than peers on social-, cognitive- and general adaptive abilities. No significantly greater proportion of children with clinical problems was found in the extremely preterm group. No differences between boys and girls born extremely preterm could be identified regarding adaptive behaviour. Emotional symtoms and peer problems were significant predictors of adaptive abilites among extremely preterm children. The impact of extreme prematurity on adaptive abilities were mediated by mental health problems and behavioural problems. Overall, this indicates that children born extremely preterm have a lower degree of adaptive behaviour compared to peers born at term. Mental health problems and behavioural problems have an impact on to what degree the children display adaptive behaviour. (Less)

I föreliggande psykologexamensuppsats undersöktes adaptivt beteende hos 52 extremt prematurfödda barn vid 6.5-års ålder. Emotionella symtom och kamratproblem var signifikanta prediktorer för adaptiva färdigheter hos extremt för tidigt födda barn. Den extrema prematuritetens påverkan på adaptivt beteende medierades av psykisk ohälsa och beteendeproblem. Sammantaget indikerar resultatet att de extremt prematurfödda barnen har en lägre grad av adaptiva beteenden än jämnåriga födda i fullgången tid. Psykisk ohälsa och beteendeproblem spelar stor roll för vilka adaptiva beteenden barnen uppvisar. (Less)
