Abstract (Swedish)
The Sweden Democrats have been taking the Swedish political system for a tumultuous spin with an explosive increase in received votes in the 2014 governmental elections. The Sweden Democrats have been taking the Swedish political system for a tumultuous spin with an explosive increase in received votes in the 2014 governmental elections. As the Sweden Democrats are viewed by some as a nationalist, anti-immigrant and a racist party, the entrance into the Swedish parliament in 2010 was met by medial as well as public havoc resulting in the establishment of a political cordon sanitaire. As the Sweden Democrats have increased in popularity in the Swedish political system, it has transcended into the Social Democratic labour unions Landsorganisationen (LO) as well, resulting in an organisational strain due to conflicting core values. Thus, in this study we aim to examine the role that organisational culture plays in Swedish labor unions regarding the communication towards its members. As this paper aims to study value based variables, the empirical material consists of six qualitative interviews with representatives from LO and its affiliated labor unions and is complemented by textual analysis. The empirical material has thereafter been contextualized through theories within the field of social sciences and strategic communication composed of opinion forming, organisational culture and organisational change. The analysis and results reveal that organisational culture plays a pivotal role in shaping as well as making up the body of the strategic communication the labor unions use/perform. A great deal of effort is made on educating the membership base and is the primary strategy for battling ideological discrepancies regarding core values within the organisations. (Less)
