Humlor i urbana miljöer: Vilka förutsättningar krävs för att de ska gynnas?

- Land-use changes have led to a decline in suitable habitats for bumblebees, which may affect pollination of crops and wild flowers. Urban green areas such as parks and private gardens have the potential to favor bumblebees and it is thus important to understand how such areas should be designed. The aim with this study is to investigate what is needed to favor bumblebees in the urban environment, in terms of flower resources, nesting habitats and how far they can fly to gather resources.

This study shows that the most important flower families for bumblebees are Fabaceae, Boraginaceae and Lamiaceae. Most bumblebees are generalists when choosing a place for nesting, but the most common nesting place is under ground in old rodent nests or above ground in association with vegetation. The distance travelled to gather nectar and pollen varies a lot between the different bumblebee species and even between different individuals of the same species. In general bumblebees with large nests travel further away from the nest to gather resources and they can fly up to several kilometers away.
In conclusion bumblebee species are essential pollinators that are important to protect and therefore further investigation is needed to determine if the available resources in the cities of Sweden are good enough to ensure a stable population of pollinators with a large diversity. Vad som krävs för att humlor ska kunna trivas i städerna, i form av miljöer för boplats och blomresurser samt inom vilket avstånd från varandra dessa kan vara, undersöktes i denna studie. Detta är viktigt vid planeringen av städerna och även vid valet av vilka blommor som ska planteras i såväl kommunala rabatter som i privata trädgårdar.
Studien visade att olika humlor föredrar olika boplatser. Vanliga platser är under marken i håligheter, i gamla bon från gnagare, i grästuvor, mossor eller i gamla fågelholkar. Viktiga blommor för humlor är exempelvis rödklöver, väddklint, mjölkört, oxtunga och blåeld. Det viktigaste vad gäller blomresurser är att ha en stor variation av blommor som gör att blommande blommor finns tillgängliga under hela perioden som humlorna är aktiva. Humlor kan flyga olika långt för att samla in nektar och pollen, allt från knappt 100 meter till några kilometer. Det har visat sig att humlor med stora kolonier, samt humlor som är stora, i större utsträckning flyger längre för att samla in resurser.
För humlorna är städerna ett fragmenterat landskap där lämpliga miljöer för habitat och blommor består av utspridda små gröna områden. Dessa områden kan vara parker, trädgårdar, koloniträdgårdar, men även mindre planteringar eller rabatter inne i staden kan ha viktiga resurser i form av pollen och nektar. De humlor som klarar sig bäst i detta fragmenterade landskap är de som är generalister i såväl val av boplats och blommor samt de som kan flyga långa sträckor för att samla in resurser. (Less)
