Abstract
Beginning with the question of whether, and how, gender equality can be measured, this thesis is written with the ambition to evaluate one aspect of the Swedish government’s equality goal, equality in power and influence, with the help of an index. It departs from a discussion within the field of gender studies where gender equality is found to be an “empty” word that can be used for a variety of goals, but also a word towards which there is a widespread positive attitude. Previously created indices together with Swedish governmental investigations about gender equality are used as a model for the index creation.
The data consist of measurements collected and compiled by Statistics Sweden. An index is created for the years 2011-2014,... (More)

Previously created indices together with Swedish governmental investigations about gender equality are used as a model for the index creation.
The data consist of measurements collected and compiled by Statistics Sweden. An index is created for the years 2011-2014, which shows that on a scale from 0 (worst) to 1 (best) these years score between 0.73 and 0.76. The created index does not convey whether nor how much gender equality has been achieved; yet I argue that the index represents an indicator which can be used to point towards areas that need extra consideration in terms of gender equality, such as the representation of women in top positions in academia and business.
