Abstract
The Swedish restricted categories in terms of ethnicity and race which where once settled as a way of creating tolerance has shown to be problematic causing even more racism. Borders or categories are built to create structure and order but instead they are causing ambivalence for the growing group of people that fall in between. The aim of this study has thereby been to investigate the experiences of ”betweenship” in relation to Post-colonial theory. In order to accomplish this study a qualitative approach was chosen, by conducting 5 semi-structured interviews with people that define themselves in a ”betweenship”. The aim of this study has thereby been to investigate the experiences of ”betweenship” in relation to Post-colonial theory. In order to accomplish this study a qualitative approach was chosen, by conducting 5 semi-structured interviews with people that define themselves in a ”betweenship”. The study has a social constructivist perspective where the material was analyzed from Postcolonial theory. The results show that ”betweenship” needs to be understood as a product of the confusion when it comes to acknowledging our differences as well as treating everyone equally. Furthermore the old structures and values from the post-colonial history are still a common way in which we create categories and reality in this confusion. Achieving equality is thereby a question that requires everyone to acknowledge the discriminating structures and let people that throughout the history been limited now talk with their own language and categories.
