- Abstract
- The aim of this essay is to investigate how victims’ tendencies to report a hate crime to the police is influenced by their level of trust towards the Police. The method used was based on a qualitative data-collection, consisting of eleven interviews. The interviews were carried out with people who considered themselves to have been exposed to hate crimes, but also with police employees specialised in hate crime. The questions asked in these interviews were targeted at acquiring information about what reasons the interviewees based their intention to report hate crimes upon. - The aim of this essay is to investigate how victims’ tendencies to report a hate crime to the police is influenced by their level of trust towards the Police. The method used was based on a qualitative data-collection, consisting of eleven interviews. The interviews were carried out with people who considered themselves to have been exposed to hate crimes, but also with police employees specialised in hate crime. The questions asked in these interviews were targeted at acquiring information about what reasons the interviewees based their intention to report hate crimes upon. The results were then analysed using the Theory of Planned Behavior and showed – to some extent – a correlation between a negative attitude or distrust towards the Police and a lack of intent to report hate crimes. Nevertheless, the results indicated that factors such as social norms and perceived behavioural control also had an influence on the tendency of a victim of a hate crime to report the case to the police. The study, therefore, showed that a negative attitude and lack of trust towards the Police or the judicial system did not have to be the main determinant when the victims decided on whether or not they would report an incident. However, the results still revealed a general lack of trust in the police and judicial system’s capability to handle cases of hate crimes. (Less)
