Abstract
It’s been known that checking of construction documents has become worse over time. There’s a lot to get done in a very short period of time and many therefore choose to do a sloppy checking or no checking at all. Checking of construction documents is done to ensure quality. Checking include both strength, building technics and technical drawing. External checking was the standard over 20 years ago, but was removed to put the responsibility in the individual companies. There’s therefore no public control to ensure that any checking is done nowadays. Sweden is one of the most liberal countries when it comes to the process of checking. WSP in Helsingborg noticed the flaws in the checking process and wanted to know what’s behind this. This paper mainly consists of an interview study with various structural engineers in six different offices in Helsingborg, Lund, Malmö and Kristianstad but also has a big part of a literature study and a document study consisting of the interviewed doing a checking of five construction drawings. The intention has been to gain an understanding of how the checking of construction documents works today and the problems found with the checking. What the causes and problems are and how it can be improved. The interviews showed that the structural engineers think that checking is an important part and should be done before the documents are sent out to become building documents. This is to ensure the quality of the documents. At the same time the majority of them has sent documents that has only been self-checked and the reason is lack of time. There’s a constant pressure from the contractors who wants to get the documents as fast as possible to be able to start the building of the project. This causes stress among the structural engineers and the checking is the part that gets cut out. Requirements on a certain control from the society seems to be the only solution. That’ll make the structural engineers and the companies more motivated and careful to document and allows them to do qualitative checking. (Less)
