- Abstract
- The purpose of this study was to examine how people with personal experience of depression create different kind of discourses and collective identities to the aspirational ”real” depression versus the ”non-acceptable” depression in a big Swedish internet forum. It also examined how the forum writers thought about empowerment versus profesional help as a solution for the ”real” depression. The discourse analysis was also applied to examine how the writers used argumentation techniques to prove themselves as a part of the collective identity for the ”real” depression. The theories that have been used were primarily Jonathan Potter’s discourse psychological concepts and secondarily Loseke’s theory about claims-making and collective identities. The result of the study showed two competing discourses, meaning that the writers were in disagreement of which depression was the ”real” one. There was however a concensus about how an ”ordinary feeling of blue” would distinguish itself from the ”real” depression. Concerning the interventions there were scattered opinions about both empowerment and professional help, but the most notable thing was the contradictive view of medical use. Many writers had a positive attitude towards the idea of using medication as part of treatment, but wouldn’t use it themselves. (Less)
