- Abstract
- Everything we see in nature shows how the environment influences them from both inside and outside, for example, appearance and inner structure. As Charles Darwin’s theory of natural selection, specific behavioural and physical adaptations that are the outcome of natural selection. [1] The outer appearance is a visible reflection
of how environment changed while the inner structure is the organism’s own respond to the changed nature environment.
People used to know these facts very well in the past; they observed and noticed every single change around themselves. We all heard about those stories like people’s being able to forecast weather by looking at and reading stars; telling how far away the coastline is by listening to the sound of waves and wind. The simplest example is that we know autumn is coming by a fallen leaf. When one puts himself
in the whole nature system, he perceives environment in with all those natural references and lives in a quite balanced way.
With the rapid development of modern technology, people no longer need to really be there to know temperature, humidity, etc. Almost everything is translated to Cold data and and showed on screen instead. Links between people and nature have been dramatically weakened, and one became just a monitor. When we focus on getting information only, we ignored our own real experience.
Nowadays, instant information is in massive demand, they need to be handy at any time. At the same time, more and more people feel needing things to be expressed in a more emotional and approachable way, that means, information needs to be carried by heart in a user-friendly way. Today, in the developing field of cognitive science, two different views are emerging. The traditional view considers thought
to be rational, logical, and orderly; this approach uses mathematical logic as the scientific means to explain thought. A newer approach is rooted in the working of the brain itself. Those of us who follow this new approach call it “connectionism.”[2]
Now, look back to the old days, when people used all their five senses to experience and to know what is going on around them, it was actually not only about getting information, but also building a natural connection to surroundings. If designer can bring this natural emotional connection back without compromising function, it will make products and end-users be closer and create more interactions in between.
In this project, I tried to convert conventional natural patterns into a practical factor and put it to design, and to arouse users’ feeling from inside; to give them a new aspect to see things that around us; and also to deliver a poetic and practical expression of information. (Less)
