- Abstract
- The aim of this study was to explore social workers' experiences and views of administrative tasks within the social services. For this study, ethnographic fieldwork in terms of observations and interviews was conducted at a social services office in Sweden. The data was analysed within a neo-institutional framework and especially inspired by an explanatory model for increasing administration that originally was developed in the police context. The result shows on the one hand that administration is a substantial part of the social workers work and that it is something constantly being talked, complained and interacted about. Negative attitudes towards administrative tasks and the stress coming out of it was distinguished feature throughout the fieldwork. On the other hand social workers revealed a somewhat ambivalent view on those tasks. For example, when asked what tasks they would give away to a potential assistants, social workers connected administration to control they were not willing to give up. Lines were blurred between different reasons for performing administrative tasks such as that there is a possibility to, that the social worker wants to and the many demands to do so.
Keywords: administration, social workers, capability will constraint theory, discretion. (Less)
