Abstract
Sediment samples have been collected in a collaboration with the faculty of engineering, Lunds Univer-sity in the northern parts of Skälderviken to determine the ongoing erosion that has been observed in earlier studies. The previous tests are the basis of the study and have been correlated with new samples taken along the coast. This study also focuses on how the inland dunes have changed since the mid-1800s and if the current dune landscape can provide us with new information about the geological development of the area by using old literature, aerial photo-graphs, and historical maps. These maps and photographs have also been compared to provide information about the coastal change, the evolution of the dune morphology and how severe... (More)

This study also focuses on how the inland dunes have changed since the mid-1800s and if the current dune landscape can provide us with new information about the geological development of the area by using old literature, aerial photo-graphs, and historical maps. These maps and photographs have also been compared to provide information about the coastal change, the evolution of the dune morphology and how severe the retrogradation of the vegetation line has been. Grain size diagrams and cumulative curves have been presented, to show the grain size variation of the dunes compared to the shore. Current grain size samples are consistent with earlier grain size results. These test results confirm that the erosion is greater in the northern parts while there is an accumulation in the southern part of the gulf. Test results from the inland dunes determine that there are also fine-grained sediments in the dunes located in the southern part of the gulf and not only at the shore, which can be related to the occurrence of lower, more rounded dunes and a more extensive shore in the same area. Interpretation and analysis of aerial photographs show that the harbour pier in the northern part most likely has accumulated in sediment slightly since 1940. This accumu-lation is most likely related to the coastal protection which was built earlier in 1967, but could also be a result of greater sediment supply from Rönne å. In addition to sampling and analysis of maps, older literature from the late 1700s has been used, to obtain more information about the earlier geological processes and to create an image of the areas morphology but also to describe the historical sand drift that took place in Skälderviken. The older litera-ture was mainly used to explain the older dune ridges found further up from the coast. The conclusions show that these dunes were constructed early in an attempt to stop the sand drift which caused severe damage to the farmers and the inhabitants in the 1700s. (Less)
