Abstract
While global carbon dioxide emissions increase considerably over the past decades, the former Soviet Union republics experience a substantial decrease of the environmental indicator since the dissolution of the USSR. Nonetheless, considering the prominent Soviet heritage in a form of energy intensive heavy manufacturing, industrialization remains one of the strong determinants for the environmental change. In contrast, urbanization demonstrates consistent insignificance. Therefore, positive and negative legacies of the Soviet urban systems are not persistent in the modern times. The study also identifies some disparities among different country groups justifying a necessity to take into consideration a big diversity across the post-Soviet... (More)
