Abstract
This report is made in order to evaluate the fire safety for the personnel and patients at Ystad hospital. A risk analysis was conducted, focusing on hazards related to fire, and on the client's wishes it was determined that the analysis should be done on the section of the hospital called building 17 and that the writers especially should consider the risk of arson. Through the analysis two different fire scenarios are selected for further investigation. A scenario in which a truck with medical supplies is ignited in a corridor and a scenario where the fire starts in a storage room. With the fire simulation software FDS and the evacuation simulation program ERM simulations are made of the two scenarios. Those simulations take into account... (More)
This report is made in order to evaluate the fire safety for the personnel and patients at Ystad hospital. Those simulations take into account both the fire and the evacuation procedures. Through the simulations the time before critical conditions arise can be measured.
According to the simulations the safety of the people inside the building cannot be guaranteed. The proposed measures to introduce sprinklers in the building and door closers on the storage doors are validated and the results show that the fire effects on the evacuating persons in respect of combustion gases, heat and radiation can be reduced to negligible levels.
The conclusion is that it should be pursued to store flammable materials in places that are inaccessible to unauthorized persons. Door closers and automatic locks should be installed in storages with high fire loads to reduce the risk of unauthorized persons getting in and a sprinkler means that the effects of the fire may be limited to levels that are not life-threatening.
