- Abstract
- The purpose of this essay is to examine how the male participants of the Swedish version of Paradise Hotel express friendship and gain power. To answer the questions of issue, 8 episodes of the reality-TV show have been analysed through Norman Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis. The theoretical framework is based on R.W. Connell’s theories regarding masculinities, Judith Butler’s theories regarding the heterosexual matrix and Eve Kosofsky Segwick’s theories regarding homosocial desire.
The final analysis suggests that the male participants uses unequal gender patterns to gain power. It also suggests that they use different ways to express friendship, e.g. by having each others back in different situations but also by objectifying...
