Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

(Less)
Abstract
This study explores leaders’ experience of working with suicide prevention within a mental healthcare setting. Qualitative semi-structured interviews were conducted with five healthcare unit managers. The data was analyzed using a shortened version of grounded theory and partially with the support of pre-existing theories. The results showed that the managers displayed a wide variety of leadership behaviors, including laissez-faire, transactional and transformative. There was some variation among the managers’ attitudes towards a suicide prevention program currently being used in the regional mental health services, the Suicide Prevention in Scanian Specialized psychiatry (SPiSS). The results also indicated that the managers’ own ways of... (More)

The results also indicated that the managers’ own ways of managing their units with regard to suicides amongst patients was largely influenced by their individual experiences, in terms of how their previous manager acted in similar situations. The study showed that transformative and transactional leadership behaviors could aid in the work with suicide prevention, and that there was a readiness, willingness and potential among the managers to improve in these aspects, that could be capitalized upon by their organization.
