Defective logic on Furutorpsgatan
- An identification of present problems and proposed measures
Helsingborg City is in the progress to make new maintenance measures on Furutorpsgatan. In relation to that, improvements to the streetscape, is also planned. Therefore a description on which problems that occurs with the current design of Furutorpsgatan, and possible measures to improve the situation have been made in this study. The current street design on Furutorpsgatan has flaws that leads to high speeds on some sections, high speed variation and a very low rate of speed compliance. Helsingborg City is in the progress to make new maintenance measures on Furutorpsgatan. In relation to that, improvements to the streetscape, is also planned. Therefore a description on which problems that occurs with the current design of Furutorpsgatan, and possible measures to improve the situation have been made in this study. The current street design on Furutorpsgatan has flaws that leads to high speeds on some sections, high speed variation and a very low rate of speed compliance. The intersection with Carl Krooks gata has major deficiencies in its design leading to confusion concerning traffic rules and also causes unwanted delays. The intersection also means barrier effects for cyclists and pedestrians. In today’s design of Furutorpsgatan separated bike lanes is absence and therefore the flow of cyclists and vehicles is mixed. This combined with high speeds on parts of the road, impede the movement as well as the traffic-safety for cyclists. The study is limited to traffic-safety and accessibility. This study does not cover the entire Furutorpsgatan and is restricted to a part of it. The subsection included in the study, begins where Malmöleden connects to Furutorpsgatan and extends up to the intersection with Gustav Adolf gata. Speed is a factor that affects traffic-safety considerably. To get an insight of the present speed situation several measurements along the street were made. In order to identify shortcomings and problems in the intersection Furutorpsgatan and Carl Krooks gata, three days of video recordings were made, and then analyzed. To identify any deficiencies that could lead to accidents, reported accidents on the stretch were analyzed. This study aims to describe the problems that occur on the studied stretch and identify possible causes of these problems and based on these, propose measures to improve the situation. Three issues raised in this study were: What does traffic-safety mean and what affect it? How is the traffic-safety affected by the current design of Furutorpsgatan and how can it be improved? How does the design of the intersection Furutorpsgatan and Carl Krook's gata affect the traffic-safety and accessibility for the different transport modes, and how can it be improved? Traffic-safety is a complex concept that is influenced by several factors. An important conclusion is that it is vital to take the site-specific conditions into account when implementing measures in the design. Furutorpsgatan’s design prioritize the vehicle traffic and therefor the traffic-safety and accessibility for this transport is the highest. By reducing the width of the road, space can be given to cyclists by constructing a separated cycle track. The logical guidance throughout the intersection, with the current design, counteracts the traffic rules for the intersection. To counter this, the road width of Furutorpsgatan could be reduced.
