The aim for this study was to examine social worker’s individual experiences on which of their personal needs they feel are being fulfilled by their workplace and what leads them to stay in their work placement. The study is based on six semi-structured interviews with social workers in Sweden. Our analysis is based on Maslow’s hierarchy of needs and terms from Human Resource Management. The analysis was based on two different kind of perspectives: one focusing on experiences of personal needs whereas the other focusing on the needs they consider fulfilled by the work organisation which leads them to stay at their work place.
The result of the study shows that there are a few common needs that our interviewees define as important for them to consider staying at their work placement. These needs can be defined as salary, colleagues, support and development. Our interviewees define these needs as somewhat different however they all tend to have a few things in common, when for instance discussing alary.
Social workers see salary as a form of reward for the work and responsibility they claim they have. Therefore, they express the need of being rewarded accordingly as a form of both monetary and psychosocial reward. (Less)
