The questions we have chosen involves how male social workers experience their daily situation and what their workplace experiences are of being in minority. We have performed six qualitative interviews with male social workers active in two different administrations in a medium-sized city.
We have analysed our empirical findings from Yvonne Hirdmans (1988) theory on gender system and our previous research. Terms we used are seekers, finders and gender contract. The results from our study shows that men have an awareness about the benefits of being a minority for example the possibility to advance faster in their careers. All the respondents in our study experience that when men are hired the work place become more dynamic, both in the work team as well as in the approach towards the clients. The respondents were also of the opinion that the status of the profession is increased with more men at the workplace. (Less)
