Abstract
The aim of this thesis is to examine if fiction books can be used as a support for
young adults in families where one of the parents suffer from mental illness. I
have used a qualitative method and have made a content analysis on five fiction
books for young adults. The fiction books were found on a list of book
recommendations published on Psykiatri Skåne’s webpage dedicated for relatives
of people that suffer from mental illness. The document with recommended books
included 27 fiction books of which I, out of the following two criterions, the
selected age group for the book and the availability on the public library, selected
five for my study. The structure of this study is composed out of these queries:

five for my study. The structure of this study is composed out of these queries:
How the main character is being described, his or her view on the mental illness
and if the descriptions in the fiction books are being captured in ways that a youth
with a mental ill parent can relate to. By studying those subjects and using a
theory on envisionment in reading by Judith Langer (2005) the following question
can be answered; can fiction books be used as support to a youth with a mental ill
parent?

My study shows that fiction books are representing a picture well captured with
previous studies on this selected group. The analysis has eight themes regarding
descriptions and out of the eight I have found scientific research that confirms
seven of them. The descriptions vary in all five books and do not show an
identical representation, but several of the main characters have characteristics in
common. For example, they have a wish to be ”just like anyone else”, and they
are self-dependent, caring, have a big need of control and are often feeling
worried. In the second part of the analysis I discuss how the descriptions can be
used as a support by presenting four strategies; identification, overlooking of the
own situation, reassessment and inspiration. The study shows that fiction can be
used as a support, but that it is a process depending on the reader’s ability and
motivation to embrace the literature. (Less)
