- Abstract
- The purpose of this study was to explore how relatives to addicts experience the relation between their own role, health and wellbeing and the support that they have received. It was based on semi-structured interviews with five persons who have or have had family members who are or were abusers of alcohol or drugs. The study used Antonovsky’s concept of Sense of Coherence as well as the notion of normality as its theoretical approaches. The results show the respondents consider that living with addicts has negatively affected their wellbeing, in physical, psychological and economical terms. The study used Antonovsky’s concept of Sense of Coherence as well as the notion of normality as its theoretical approaches. The investigation also revealed that the respondents emphasize the importance for relatives of addicts to receive support in order to build a sense of coherence. Respondents who applied for aid from the authorities as adults seemed satisfied with the operation of call in outpatient care. In turn, the respondents who called for help as children or adolescents felt that their needs where overlooked by the authorities. Moreover, several of the respondents reasoned about codependency as a term that, when introduced, helped them both understand better and to normalize their situation.
