Abstract
This Master thesis was written for the Division of Production and Materials Engineering, Faculty of Engineering at Lund University.

Burr formation is a problematic aspect of almost all manufacturing processes. Its occurrence can effectively interfere with manufacturing of a component or product in both a technical way, hindering proper assembly and lowering part accuracy, and in an economic way, requiring time and investment in deburring equipment that increase the difficulty of keeping low production cost. In addition to this, burrs are often sharp and can easily cause cut wounds if not handled properly.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the process of burr formation in turning operations, to understand how different burrs originate and how their size is affected by varying cutting data and cutting conditions. The goal is to begin building knowledge from which burr prevention and minimization can be achieved, as a step towards achieving better part accuracy, lower part cost and a safer working environment.

The effect of cutting data and tool geometry on axial rollover burr, tangential rollover burr, and Poisson burr dimensions are investigated in turning of SS 2244 alloy steel and SS 2348 stainless steel. The axial rollover burr and tangential rollover burr formation process is also filmed using a high speed camera to visualize the steps of formation, and the high speed recording of tangential rollover burr formation is compared to FE-analysis of a tangential tool exit. A nano indentation hardness test is performed to investigate the hardness of axial rollover burrs in SS 2348
.
Results show the step by step formation of axial and tangential rollover burrs, and how burr dimensions are affected by material properties, cutting data and tool geometry. (Less)
