"I minnet är det två olika platser" - om samspelet mellan minne och arkitektur

Ett av mina starkaste minnen kring arkitektur är minnet ä av en pojke som cyklar på en trehjuling Han trampar snabbt på tramporna och far fram genom korridorerna inne på hotellet där han bor. Dörrarna in till hotellrummen på vardera sidan om honom svischar snabbt förbi. Trehjulingens däck låter dämpat mot den mjuka mattan på golvet när pojken cyklar om hörn efter hörn innan han plötsligt stannar framför två flickor. ”Hello Danny”, viskar flickorna unisont. ”Come play with us.”
I det här fallet har arkitekturen en avgörande betydelse för hur jag upplever och minns händelsen, trots att den inte spelar huvudrollen. Det är inte på byggnadsdelar mitt fokus ligger, men utan dessa golv hörn och dörrar hade scenen jag minns ifrån The Shining (Stanley Kubrick, 1980) inte haft samma spänning och Danny och hans trehjuling hade snabbt fallit i glömska.
Under mitt första år på arkitektur-utbildningen fick jag under en föreläsning ordet ”arkitektur” definierat för mig som ett ord att använda om ”väderskydd med en viss höjd i den estetiska ansatsen.” Inte vilken fysisk struktur som helst kunde kallas för arkitektur, enligt mannen (för det var en man, även om jag har glömt hans namn) som höll i föreläsningen. För att arkitektur ska produceras måste där både finnas en person med en ansats i samband med uppförandet av strukturen och (minst) en person som kan uppfatta denna ansats när han eller hon upplever byggnaden.
Detta arbete fokuserar på den senare delen av denna arkitekturproduktion – på upplevelsen. En upplevelse som, enligt både filosofer och forskare inom naturvetenskap, är beroende, av både de fysiska förhållandena i realtid och av upplevarens samlade minnesbank av kulturella, sociala, känslomässiga, arkitektoniska, verbala (etc., etc.) referenser att jämföra med. På vilka sätt påverkar byggnation vår minnesfunktion? Och på vilka sätt samverkar arkitektur och minne?

One of my strongest memories concerning architecture is the memory of a boy, riding his tricycle. He’s pedaling fast. He’s shooting through the corridors of the hotel where he’s living with his mom and dad. The doors to the hotel rooms on either side of him pass by in a fast pace. The wheels of the tricycle make muffled sounds against the soft carpets on the floor as the boy rides passed one corner after another. All of a sudden he stops riding his bike in front of two girls – identical down to the bows in their pigtails. ”Hello Danny” the girls whisper in one voice. ”Come play with us.”
In this memory, architecture is of crucial importance to the way I experience and remember the event, even though it does not play the main lead in the event. My focus is not directed towards the components of the building itself, but without these walls, ceilings, floors and doors, the scene that I remember from The Shining (Stanley Kubrick, 1980), would not possess the same chilling tensions, and both Danny and his tricycle would soon have fallen into oblivion.
During my first year of studying architecture, I had the word architecture defined to me as being a word to be used about a ”construction with a certain height to the aesthetic ambitions”. Any old construction could not be called architecture, according to the man (for it was a man, I remember that much even though I’ve forgotten his name) lecturing. Hence, for architecture to be produced, there has to be both a person that has ambitions for the construction, and (at least) one person to perceive these ambitions as he or she experiences the building.
This degree project focuses on the latter part of this production of architecture – the experience. An experience, that according to both philosophers and natural scientists, are dependent on both the physical circumstances at the time of the experience and on the accumulated memories of the person experiencing. In what ways do architecture and memory interplay?
