Abstract
In November 2010 the largest outbreak in Sweden, and the second largest worldwide, of the parasite Cryptosporidium in public water supplies happened. The cause is still unknown, but the effects of the outbreak were that 27 000 inhabitants in the city of Östersund got infected. This study is a research of how other municipalities in Sweden are working with, preserving healthy drinking water, and how it has changed. In this study I have performed literature study to conclude what the knowledge of the problems are. I have also used a qualitative method which included to interview three different people with a focus on who works with risk assessment and who does not. This was to compare how they are experiencing that today’s knowledge has... (More)

They really stressed that the outbreak in Östersund has affected their purifying methods, most waterworks have nowadays installed UV-lights to purify the water from parasites. Even though waterborne outbreaks of Cryptosporidium is not common compared to other pathogens, they can be severe when they happen. Also since Sweden will undergo a climate change, which will make the weather more favorable for parasites, this is an important issue to highlight. With more knowledge about the problem, and better structure in the risk assessment and risk management for similar situations, this problem might be prevented. (Less)
