- Abstract
- The aim of the study is to find a relation between the tip pressure produced by ram sounding and CPT in order to improve the possibilities of determining the shear strength of clay till. CPT is a pressure probe and mainly used to get a good picture of the statigraphy and the soil condition. CPT has shown to be useful regarding the evaluation of key parameters such as shear strengh and angle of friction of homogeneous soils. The disadvantage of CPT is that it is sensitive and can not be powered down in stiff soils. The probe measures three different parameters: tip pressure, skin friction and pore pressure. Tip pressure is the parameter used most frequently and measured by a greater volume around the probe tip. Different probing methods... (More)

Different probing methods such as weight probe is difficult to be driven into the coarser and firmer soils because they have a small probing area. As a solution to the problem, the ram sounding was devoloped during the 1940s and occurs in two verions; HfA and HfB. Swedish experience is based on the HfA method. HfA has proven to be good to determine the required length of bearing piles. The disadvantage is that it is poor for evaluating important parameters in soil, particulary looser soils. The probe measures number of impacts / 0.2 m. Another kind of probing that is used more internationally is SPT that works alomost like ram sounding. Several correlations have been developed for the evaluation of various parameters for SPT. The conclusion is that it appears to be a weak relation between ram sounding and CPT tip pressure. The relation is to week to be used as a correlation to evaluate the shear strength of clay till, it requires significantly more extensive surveys and several parameters to take into account to produce a safe correlation. Keywords: CPT, ram sounding, clay till, shear strength (Less)
