Abstract
Background: Nolato MediTech AB has an experience-based knowledge of the
amount of man-hours needed for its products. In order to calculate the correct cost
price for the products and thus the correct price towards its customers, Nolato
would like to know the exact amount of man-hours needed for each product. Since
resources are expensive and the company is implementing a lean philosophy they
would also like to have an optimal planning and scheduling of the production and
hence utilize current resources in best of manners.

a process for maximizing the utilization of labor and machine capacity.
Method: The study is a case study and the method used is deductive qualitative.
The data used in this study is based on primary and secondary sources and has been
collected through observations, interviews, surveys and data archives.
Conclusions: The study concludes that a process where the operator himself
performs the time study can work as a good and resource-economic way of
acquiring the operation times. However, this process requires a good relationship
between employee and employer and that the employers are motivated to
participate. In order for operators to feel motivated in participation they have to
have incitements. The obtained man-hours for each product where used to create a
process for maximizing the utilization rate of labor and machine capacity. It was
concluded that labor capacity is the more restricted resource and the simple
prioritizing rule; shortest operation time first, generated a job schedule with a
utilization of labor in par with the best combinations of job schedules. However, it
shall be noted that the sample size on which this prioritizing rule was evaluated is
not statistically significant and hence further research is required. Also in order to
achieve a high utilization rate of labor from week to week, it is equally important to
manage the order releases so that there is sufficient work in production throughout
the whole week. Finally a detailed scheduling in the shop floor revealed during
what times of the day operators had the greatest workload. In order to achieve a
smoother workload throughout the day it was proposed that the control and
measuring for the different products should be performed at different times. (Less)
