Stadsdelsbiblioteket som kulturhus

Abstract

The Swedish public library as institution is under
change. Library loans is steadily decreasing because
content is now accessible for users at home via the
internet. However, the library building is still being
visited for a wide variety of purposes. It is a place for
study for all age-groups and many libraries provide
learning spaces for adults.

Children and youth are important groups because the
library provides a place for learning by playing in an
environment not part of the school or the domestic
sphere. They are also potentially life-long users.
The expression: ”The library as a public living room”
can be interpreted both as room of socialising and as
a free indoor space to just be in. Another strategy is
to make it an active place providing new experiences
to the users in form of explorative architecture, public
events and creative workshops.

The idea of library as a cultural center has long
existed in the Swedish library sphere. However it can
be questioned who has access to this public room
since the more traditional libraries is attracting mostly
focused readers. The library as a community center
that reaches out to new target groups and providing
different meeting places for new users in the local
community have become statutory although regional
strategies not necessarily promote this.

This thesis examines the role of library architecture
within the discourse mentioned above and from the
local context of Malmö. By architectural design I
have sketched a strategy for a new building in the
shopping center Mobilia, one of Malmös busiest
malls. The design discusses a potential architectural
symbiosis of the center and an inviting, explorative
active library for the wide public.

Det svenska folkbiblioteket som institution är under
förändring. Utlånen minskar då material nu är tillgängligt
för användare hemifrån via internet. Däremot
används biblioteksbyggnaderna fortfarande till en
rad olika ändamål. Det är en plats på för studier för
många olika målgrupper och många bibliotek har
inrättat lärcentrum för vuxna.

Barn och ungdom är en viktig grupp eftersom bibliotek
är en plats för lärande genom lek som varken är
kopplad till skolan eller till hemmet. Unga är också
potentiella framtida användare.

Uttrycket: ”Biblioteket som stadens vardagsrum” kan
tolkas både som ett rum för sociala aktiviteter och en
inomhusyta att gratis få finnas i. En annan strategi är
att göra det till en aktiv plats som erbjuder nya upplevelser
till användarna i form av spännande arkitektur,
offentliga arrangemang och kreativa workshops.

Idén om biblioteket som ett kulturhus har länge
existerat inom den svenska bibliotekssfären. Man kan
dock ifrågasätta vem som har tillgång till detta offentliga
rum eftersom mer traditionella bibliotek i första
hand attraherar användare inriktade på bokläsning.
Biblioteket som en mötesplats för lokalsamhället och
som riktar sig till nya målgrupper och användare har
blivit en lagstadgad medborgerlig rättighet, även om
kommuner inte alltid uppfyller detta krav.

Detta examensarbete undersöker biblioteksarkitekturens
roll i ovanstående diskussion utifrån en lokal
kontext i Malmö. Genom arkitektonisk gestaltning har
jag skissat upp en strategi för en ny biblioteksbyggnad
i Mobilia, ett av Malmös största köpcentrum. Genom
skissen vill jag diskutera en potentiell symbios mellan
centret och ett inbjudande, upplevelserikt och aktivt
bibliotek för den breda massan.
