Stadens Mellanrum – ett förtätningsprojekt i Malmö

- Abstract (Swedish)
(SCB,
2016)

verklig. (Less) - Abstract

The housing shortage in Sweden is identified as an urgent
social problem, and in recent years the situation has become
increasingly difficult. 94% of the Swedish population today
lives in a municipality where there is a housing shortage.
Like the other major cities in Sweden today, Malmö is in
great need for more housing. In 2020 Malmö’s population is
expected to pass 350,000 inhabitants. Malmö aims to densify
the city inward, and to cope with the great migration that lies
ahead it is necessary to find innovative solutions on how to
densify Malmö. (Malmö, 2010)
The aim of the project is to question how we use city spaces,
and what the outcome will be if you look at densification and
traffic in the city from a new perspective.
The work consists of two parts, the first part is an analysis of
Malmö from a densification perspective and was made as a
complement to the City of Malmö densification strategy to
find new approaches for densification. The place is studied
as a phenomenon and form the basis for further work where it
concretize in a specific location.
The second part is the result of the analysis, consisting of a
housing project that strives to add more qualities in the city
than is taken away, something that is rarely the case today in
densification of cities.
The location of the project is situated on the outskirts of
Möllevången in central Malmö, where two busy streets
meet. By limiting accessibility for car traffic locally, the site’s
potential as an intense and vibrant part of the city of Malmö
can become real. (Less)
