Abstract
There have previously been studies researching internal democracy within various political parties. These studies has however been focused on comparing different parties within the same country as well as researching how appointments to top positions within the political party work. There has not been a lot of research focusing on the consequences of politicians separating themselves from the party’s official stance. Therefore this study is focused on the consequences.

In order to achieve this seven cases have been used highlighting what the politicians have said and what the consequences were. All seven cases are from the Swedish party Nya Moderaterna. The reason being that they were one of the parties where the most politicians did not agree with the official party stance in a number of different questions. The material that has been used in order to answer the questions asked in this study is for the most part news articles written by Swedish newspapers.
When studying the different cases a liberal feminist theory have been used, not to compare the cases but instead to try to understand if the political party Nya Moderaterna is favouring men over women or vice versa. It has also been used to critique the consequences.
The results were clear. Out of the seven cases five politicians had faced consequences that had impacted the future of their political career whilst the other two had continued on as before without any observational consequences. It was also concluded that the gender of the various politicians did not play a significant part in how they were treated by Nya Moderaterna. (Less)
