När orden inte räcker till - en kvalitativ studie om ordlöshetens dilemman och möjligheter i mötet mellan terapeut och patient

- Syftet med denna kvalitativa studie har varit att beskriva psykoterapeuters upplevelser av ordlöshet i mötet med patienter, här barn eller ungdomar och om och i så fall hur teori kan vara till hjälp i själva mötet. Studien har genomförts utifrån ett fenomenologiskt – hermeneutiskt perspektiv och en icke-verbal, konstnärlig undersökningsmetod, s k ”art-based inquiry” har använts i kombination med intervjusamtal för insamling av data. Fyra psykoterapeuter deltog i studien vars utgångspunkt var informanternas minnen av en episod när orden inte räckte till i mötet med en patient. Informanterna gav uttryck för sina erfarenheter i bild och text samt i intervjusamtal i grupp och enskilt.

Studien visar exempel på hur bildskapande och betraktande av bilder påverkade informanternas minnesepisoder. Samspelet mellan bilder och texter belyser olika perspektiv på den ordlösa kommunikationen i det terapeutiska mötet, till exempel ’ordlös censur’, ’ordlöst arbete’, ’ordlös lek’ och ’ordlös befrielse’. Teoretiska perspektiv visade sig vara avgörande för att skapa distans, möjlighet till reflektion och fördjupad förståelsen för ordlöshetens verkningar i informanternas möten med sina patienter.

- The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore psychotherapist´s experiences of being in a therapeutic relationship with a patient, a child or an adolescent “when words are not enough” and if and how theory could be supportive in the specific situation. The study has applied a qualitative method combining phenomenological and hermeneutic perspectives and a non-verbal, art-based method, ‘art-based-inquiry’ in combination with verbal inquiry in the form of dialogues for the collection of data. Four psychotherapists participated in the inquiries expressing their experiences in images, texts and dialogues. The starting point of the inquiry was the participant´s memories of an episode when words were not enough in the interplay with the patient. The study shows examples of how the image making and the observation of the images influenced the memories of the participants. The interplay between images and texts brings forth various perspectives of the non-verbal interplay between therapists and patients, for example ‘wordless censoring’, ‘wordless working’, ‘wordless playing’ and ‘wordless liberation’. Theoretical perspectives proved crucial to distancing, reflection and a deeper understanding regarding the influence of wordlessness of the participant´s meeting with their patients.
