(2017) PSPT02 20162Department of Psychology
- Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

(Less)
- Abstract
- This study has investigated nine people's experiences of having a sibling who suffers from long-term psychosis. The study had a phenomenological point of departure and the material were thematically analyzed. The main findings from the study was that the patients’ siblings experienced guilt, sadness, powerlessness, anxiety, ambivalence towards intimacy, and autonomy in their relationship with the affected sibling, as well as a fear of becoming ill with psychosis themselves or passing it on to their children. Furthermore, several of participants in the study described that they felt compelled to distance themselves from their families. The findings were discussed in relation to previous research on being a close relative to someone... (More)

Furthermore, several of participants in the study described that they felt compelled to distance themselves from their families. The findings were discussed in relation to previous research on being a close relative to someone suffering from psychosis or other severe mental illness, as well as in relation to mentalisation theory, self-psychology and the concept of stigma. The siblings who were interviewed in this study had only received help or support to a small extent. Siblings are given low priority in this context, but they are an important group with specific support needs which should be identified at an early stage. (Less)
