- The aim of this study was to examine how contraceptive responsibility is constructed in the interaction between man and woman during casual sexual relations. The analysis was based on two theories; a theory about the world as a social construction and gender theory. The result show that the respondents express that responsibility for contraception is shared between the man and the woman. However, they describe protection against pregnancy as the woman’s responsibility if any other contraception is used than the condom. Most respondents say that they communicate about contraception before... (More)

The analysis was based on two theories; a theory about the world as a social construction and gender theory. The study is based on qualitative interviews with four young adults (two men and two women). The interviews were analysed with a thematic analyse method. The result show that the respondents express that responsibility for contraception is shared between the man and the woman. However, they describe protection against pregnancy as the woman’s responsibility if any other contraception is used than the condom. Most respondents say that they communicate about contraception before the sexual meeting or adjacent to intercourse. The respondents describe gender-based sexual ideals, relations, trust and alcohol as limiting their possibility to take responsibility for, communicate about, and practice safe sex. As a conclusion, both women and men show limited ability to take responsibility for, communicate about and practice safe sex. Both visible and invisible gendered-relations of power need to be considered to understand the construction of contraceptive responsibility during casual sex relations between a man and a woman.
