- Abstract
- The purpose of this study was to explore, from a Lean perspective, the possibilities to improve IKEA DC Älmhult's operational efficiency in the processes of receiving and shipping. Through Process activity mapping, the current practices for shipping and receiving operations were described and analyzed in detail. Waste, primarily in the form of transport, motion and waiting, was identified and focus areas for improve-ment suggestions were chosen according to their relevance and feasibility for simple solutions. With the aim to resolve bottlenecks and create a smooth flow, waste reduc-tion measures were suggested, divided into short-term, mid-term and long-term rec-ommendations. The short-term recommendations such as 5S, Checklist and an... (More)

The short-term recommendations such as 5S, Checklist and an in-struction sheet for changing rolls, can be directly and easily implemented, while the mid-term and long-term waste reduction measures require more effort and/or further investigation. By implementing the suggestions for waste reduction, 10 out of the 14 IKEA KPIs associated with shipping and receiving will be improved, demonstrating the large potential for warehouse performance improvement. This study hereby con-tributes to closing the research gap of warehouse shipping and receiving operations, and demonstrates the possibilities and benefits of applying Lean concepts for ware-house operations.
