The aim of this exploratory study was to examine what motivates social workers in the drug abuse field to remain in their jobs for longer than five years. Data was collected via semi-structured face-to-face interviews with five social workers in a municipal social services administration in south-western province of Scania. The analysis empolyed qualitative approach using Herzbergs two-factor-theory and Hirschmans taxonomi of reactions: Exit, Voice and Loyalty, as a framwork. The findings showed that the earlier life events did exert a powerful influence on the motivation to work. All respondents were highly influenced by life experiences connected to drug abuse.
