- Abstract
- The last decades the modern sporthorse have changed a lot, both physically and in temperament. Horses have gotten more athletic, sensitive and faster. Selective breeding, new science findings and more competition, in combination with a role change from workhorse to sporthorse have made this change possible. The idea to investigate and develop horse equipment was initialised during meetings with the company Equimade, with the goal to cater for the changed needs of the horse. - The last decades the modern sporthorse have changed a lot, both physically and in temperament. Horses have gotten more athletic, sensitive and faster. Selective breeding, new science findings and more competition, in combination with a role change from workhorse to sporthorse have made this change possible. The idea to investigate and develop horse equipment was initialised during meetings with the company Equimade, with the goal to cater for the changed needs of the horse. The brief involved making a bridle, a breastplate and dressage and showjumping saddle girths, including a finished prototype made by manufacturer, ready for mass production. The main focus was to work with padding and fit to improve comfort and thus boost performance, as previous research indicated a link between the two. After research of existing products, the horse anatomy and physiology as well as researching leather as a material and the leather business, mock-ups and fabric models were constructed. The products were tested on horses and interviews were made with riders and other equestrian professionals. Technical drawings were prepared and used during the first factory visit where the first set of leather prototypes were made. Further testing led to extensive changes being made to the products but also led to the decision to cancel development of the breastplate due to, amongst other factors, lack of time. After integrating the changes into the products, a new set of prototypes were made and tested. The reception was overall good, showing that the ideas and solutions integrated into the products served their purpose and were appreciated by the riders and their horses. (Less)
