However, there is no way for the authorities to demand high competence in nature conservation work in the public procurement, nor is there a way for the machine contractors to display high competence in nature conservation work. Machine operators working in forestry are offered educations in ecosystem function and nature conservation, but not the machine operators in the agricultural landscape. Thus, it is up to the management on projects outside of forestry to educate the machine operators in the methods and theory surrounding the nature conservation projects. In this study I tried to find out how Scanian machine operators working in nature conservation in the agricultural landscape perceive their role in the projects. My aims were to 1) identify the opinions of the machine operators regarding the amount of information they get about nature conservation 2) how involved the machine operators felt in the projects and 3) if there is a demand for an education in nature conservation by the machine operators. I thereby conducted a questionnaire with the Scanian machine operators working on nature conservation projects in Scania. The results showed that machine operators who had participated in fewer than 20 nature conservation projects had little interest and knowledge about nature conservation. They also felt less involved and appreciated than the machine operators who had participated in more than 20 projects. A majority of the machine operators had positive attitudes towards getting more information and education on nature conservation practises, and the enquiry showed that both authorities and machine contractors expressed concerns regarding the public procurement. I denna studie har jag försökt ta reda på hur skånska maskinoperatörer som arbetar i naturvård i jordbrukslandskapet uppfattar sin roll i projekten. Jag genomförde därmed en enkätstudie med de skånska maskinoperatörer som arbetar med naturvårdsprojekt i Skåne. Jag genomförde även en litteraturstudie för att få djupare förståelse för naturvårdsarbetet, de omgivande lagarna i skogs- och jordbrukslandskapet samt den offentliga upphandlingens uppbyggnad.
Resultatet av enkätstudien visade att maskinoperatörerna som hade deltagit i färre än 20 naturvårdsprojekt hade lite intresse och kunskap om naturvårdsarbete. De kände sig även mindre involverade och mindre uppskattade än maskinoperatörer som hade deltagit i mer än 20 projekt. Intresset för naturvårdsarbetet ökade även i takt med att kunskapen ökade (Figur 1), likaså hur värderad maskinföraren kände sig, intresset avtog dock efter 60 års ålder. En majoritet av maskinoperatörer hade positiva attityder till att få mer information och utbildning om naturvårdsmetoder, och enkätstudien visade även att både myndigheter och maskinentreprenörer uttryckte kritik mot den offentliga upphandlingens utformning. Om en utbildning inom naturvård skulle kunna vara en del av den offentliga upphandlingen är en komplicerad fråga, men att erbjuda en utbildning till maskinoperatörer som är intresserade skulle kunna förbättra deras arbetsvillkor och självkänsla under de första åren i sitt arbetsliv.
