- In this thesis essay I am going to study articles in two British newspapers to see if there is a
connection between immigration and the Brexit referendum which took place on the 23rd of
June 2016. The Brexit referendum was followed by a great media spectacle and each side
campaigned to try to win over the voters. Finally, the leave side won with 52,5% against 47,5%
voting to stay. I studied ten articles from The Daily Mail and The Sun which showed 80% of
the articles voting to leave and the remaining 20%, to stay. The leave campaign were mainly
against immigration and argued the immigrants were the root to the problems the UK was
facing, especially financially. The remain campaign articles only argued for the economic

benefits of staying in the EU and escalated to saying that despite staying in the EU, the
government is going to negotiate for more control over the UK borders. Evidently, this added
more fuel to the fire and gave the leave side more confidence that they were voting leave for
