Abstract
There are many contributing factors, to why Northern Ireland is regarded as a prime example for conflict resolution. In this thesis, we will seek to test the factors, that several scholars and politicians, such as; Tony Blair, Peter Hain and Jennifer Todd, have argued were the most important to create piece. This will be done through a comparative study with Cyprus, which is still regarded an active conflict, to analyse what factors that differ on the two cases. With this method, we concluded that a lack of political framework, as well as a situation which was not ripe for peace, were the two factors that set the cases apart. We did also find several similarities between the two cases, such as present third party mediation, economic... (More)

With this method, we concluded that a lack of political framework, as well as a situation which was not ripe for peace, were the two factors that set the cases apart. We did also find several similarities between the two cases, such as present third party mediation, economic incentives and cessation of violence. Our study does not provide a model for peace resolution, but more of a pratical test for the lessons Blair, Hain and Todd believe can be learned from Northern Ireland. We know that for Northern Ireland it created peace, to have all 5 in place. For Cyprus, the remaining two might be the answer to the conflict. (Less)
