- Abstract
- The development of antibiotic resistant bacteria is potentially one of the largest challenges of our times. Despite the well-known fact that resistant bacteria evolve from over use this wrongful use continues, not the least in animal production. Despite that Denmark and Sweden have many cultural similarities, the usage of antibiotics in animal production shows significant differences. Sheila Jasanoff writes in her book “Designs on Nature” (2011) that the difference in how scientific facts are received depends on political cultural differences. In my thesis, I will test Jasanoffs theory and examine if political cultural differences contribute to the difference in use of antibiotics. My thesis is hence theory tentatively.

The question is: Which differences in the political culture in Sweden versus Denmark contributes to the differences in the usage of antibiotics? To try Jasanoffs theory, three factors are examined. How the different actors describe the usage of antibiotics, the citizen’s general knowledge and awareness regarding animal welfare and the usage of antibiotics and finally the ultimate power of the decision makers.
The result shows that there are differences and that Jasanoffs theory can explain some of these differences. However, the influence of the animal production industry and differences in the tradition of using antibiotics might also have a major impact. (Less)
