Abstract
Ontological security has for the last ten years emerged as a fruitful analytical tool to construe political movement by understanding the individual subject as in the need for a coherent and secure self-identity. Three articles with different views on how the individual subject is understood has recently been published. They criticise common assumptions within the field of ontological security.
This paper analyzes how the individual subject is understood within these critiques along with the article that first conceptualized ontological security in a context of political science. This paper analyzes how the individual subject is understood within these critiques along with the article that first conceptualized ontological security in a context of political science. Based on this analysis, an additional understanding of ontological security as an analytical tool is suggested. This paper proposes a more differentiated interpretation of the ways which the subject can gain ontological security through, while still understanding identity as the core for the analysis. The ontological security is further conceptualized as potentially founded in more than one identity and as both supplying the subject with a sense of stability and flexibility. This analytical tool is proposed to more accurately understand political movement that seeks change and at the same time being able to include moral action and to avoid depoliticise the subject.
