Abstract
2015 was a tough year for the Swedish government and especially the Social Democrats in Sweden. This essay examines what caused the establishment of border controls by looking at the Social Democrats with the help of two theories concerning party strategies. The paper is based on, in addition to the theories, interviews with social democratic members of the parliament. The featured perspectives and theories that have been used are Anthony Downs's theory about politicians' actions as well as Gunnar Sjöbloms theory of party strategies. There is no suggestion that the there was strategies behind the decision to introduce border controls.
