- Abstract
- This thesis explores the ways for diasporas to influence politics in their homeland. Diaspora groups, having a triadic relationship, are categorized as transnational actors that are able to create networks and connections beyond the borders from abroad to homeland. Having such a relationship and a “homeland orientation”, diaspora groups may conduct activities to influence homeland politics. Being able to bring up members’ aspirations “from below”, the structures possessed by diaspora allow diaspora’s movements to be conducted in a more organized way, therefore their aspirations can get more attentions from the authorities and the public. And eventually, they are able to influence homeland politics. The case study of the Indonesian “diasporic project” on promoting dual citizenship in Indonesia demonstrates that the organization “Indonesia Diaspora Network” becomes an effective “vehicle” for the Indonesian diaspora to conduct this project. Since the establishment of the organizations in 2012, their efforts on performing the functions of diaspora organizations have yielded some positive responses from the Government of the Republic of Indonesia. The policy dynamics towards dual citizenship in Indonesia illustrates that the Government has paid attentions to the presence of the Indonesian diaspora thus resulted in the approval of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia to discuss for the amendment of citizenship law, as well as legal recognitions from the Government of Indonesia.
